1962
Saf-T-Mate Boat Company began production of fiberglass boats in Cadillac,
Michigan. 1975
The Winn Family, Bill Sr. and sons John, Charlie, and Bill Jr. buy Safe-T-Mate
Boats. The first boats were called Saf-T-Mate by Four Winns.
1976
Product lines consisted of:
Nassau
Admiral II
Captain (16 ft open bow, the most popular boat in the brand)
Cutlass (16 ft closed bow)
Mazda (15 ft tri-hull)
Cordova (17 ft tri-hull)
1978
Marquis line introduced. Fire on May 5, 1978 all but levels Four Winns plant.
Part of finished boats rescued from destruction become plugs to create molds for
future products. By November 1978, production resumed in a newly built plant
1979
Catalina line of tri-hull models introduced. Santara line of cuddy cabin models
introduced.
1980
Engineering and production capabilities expand and dealer organization grows.
Candia™ deck boat line introduced
1981
First international dealer signed on: Nautic Willerson in Germany. Today, Four
Winns international operations are among the best in the industry.
1983
Liberator performance-oriented cuddy cabin models introduced. Line continued
until 1992. It is a legendary boat even today
1984
The Horizon™ line of open bow boats introduced. Today's Horizon™ line runs from
17' to 28' and is one of the most popular lines in boating. The Horizon series
includes the popular Fish 'N Ski with either outboard or sterndrive propulsion.
The Sundowner™ line of cuddy cabin models introduced. Today's Sundowner line
starts at 21' and runs to 28' with the prestigious 285 Sundowner model. Vista®
cruiser series introduced. Today's Vista series offers five models from 24' to
33'. The 338 Vista cruiser offers inboard power for freshwater or salt water
cruising.
1985
Four Winns cruiser plant opened to handle larger craft. Today's cruiser facility
builds all Four Winns products larger than 23'
1986
Freedom™ model introduced. On-the-Water Test and Technical Center opened. Four
Winns remains one of the few boat builders with an on-the-water test facility.
Four Winns trailer division began. Trailer production includes every step from a
multi-station weld line to electrostatic painting and final assembly. Today,
Four Winns is the only leading manufacturer to build its own custom trailers.
Four Winns became part of Outboard Marine Corporation. OMC was one of the
largest producers of marine products and propulsion systems in recreational
boating.
1988
A new line of cruisers introduced: 285 and 315 Vista®, and the 325 and 365
Express both with inboard power. Today's line of Vista cruisers offers choices
in models 248, 268, 298, 328, 348 and 378 (with inboard power)
1989
Four Winns opens a new Engineering & Research Center with 30,000 sq. ft. Today's
engineering processes rely on precise Pro-E solid modeling CAD; 5-axis,
computer-driven routing of plug components; famous Four Winns ergonomic design
concepts.
1993
Four Winns introduces Stable-Vee® Hull Design to recreational boating. Popular
Mechanics awarded it the prestigious Product Engineering Award. Today, Stable-Vee
is in its third generation with a smoother ride and better performance than
ever. No other boat manufacturer can provide the characteristics of Stable-Vee.
OMC and Volvo-Penta, enter into a joint venture to produce and market sterndrive
systems
1995
Four Winns offers Volvo-Penta drives with cone clutch design for smoother
shifting and more reliable performance. Today, cone clutch stern drives found on
Four Winns boats are still the most technologically advanced. Smooth, quiet
shifting is one sign of Volvo advanced engineering. Four Winns introduces
"helm-forward" cockpit design in many of the new Horizon™ and Sundowner™
sportboat models. Today, Four Winns designs provide more usable room than any
other leading brand throughout its lines.
1998
Four Winns introduces the "next generation" Horizon™ open bow and Sundowner™
cuddy cabin models. These new models advance the concept of Four Winns products
responding to the needs of recreational boaters of all types. Funship™ deck boat
line introduced with a series of three models to meet the needs of the deck boat
fan. Today, Four Winns remains the third leading recreational boat brand in the
industry.
2000
Four Winns introduces a number of advancements to make boating more fun and
easier to enjoy:
- The popular Fish 'N Ski package is available in stern drive power
- Extended swim platforms are available on nearly every model
- A custom-designed wakeboard tower is available on select models.
2001
Four Winns purchased by Genmar Corporation, the largest marine producer in the
world.
2004
Making history in the boating industry with the introduction of Cross Stream™
Architecture.
